According to Ayurveda textbooks, Rheumatoid arthritis is described as “Amavata”, here ‘Ama’ depicts the toxic material that is generated as an unwholesome product of undigested food and Vata is the movement-related biological component of the body.
When Vata is out of balance ama can move freely throughout the body resulting in the accumulation of toxins (ama) in the body at tissue level followed by diminishing dhatu agni. In case of Rheumatoid arthritis the accumulation takes place in the joints, disturbing the agni between asthi (bones) and mamsa (muscle). This results in deformities, loss in muscle mass, pain , swelling in joints etc.
Some of the external treatments used for the ayurvedic treatment of Rheumatoid arthritis is given below:
Choorna Kizhi: In this procedure, a mixture of natural herbs are gently applied over the body until the person sweats considerably; resulting in the detoxification through sweat. This treatment is conducted in sitting, supine, left lateral, and right lateral position for a patient.
Abhyangam: In this procedure, a special type of oil is applied on the body and a gentle massage is given for 45 minutes per day through various strokes. Herbs are added to the oil which can nourish the joints whereas oil is used as the carrier of herbs in this procedure.
Njavarakizhi: In this procedure, Njavara rice is cooked in milk and a medicinal decoction is prepared. Following which four bundles of Navara rice are made that are dipped in the decoction which is used for massaging. 2 to 4 therapists are required to perform this procedure which helps in nourishing the muscles and cartilages of the affected area.
